Ann Thornycroft
Ann Thornycroft, who was born and raised in the English countryside, draws on her experiences and memories of nature as the foundation for her abstract compositions. Thornycroft is best known for her large-scale, grid-based compositions, though the execution of these works varies in rigidity and expressiveness. Recurring motifs in Thornycroft’s work also include overlapping circular forms and arcs that resemble botanical forms. Her paintings marry the empathic potential of lyrical color with the meditative balance of pattern and structure. The repetitive patterns contrasted by the fluid, instinctual forms that permeate the oeuvre of Thornycroft, reflect her perception of predictable and unpredictable relationships in nature. Her work has been displayed in solo exhibitions throughout California and is also featured in the public collections of the Portland Art Museum, the Boise Art Museum, and Disney Studios.
