Frank Stella
Frank Stella (1936–2024) was one of the most influential figures in postwar American art and a central voice in the development of Minimalism. Emerging in the late 1950s, Stella rejected expressive gesture and illusionism in favor of clarity, structure, and objecthood. His oft-quoted statement, “What you see is what you see,” captures his belief that a painting should be understood as a physical object rather than a symbolic or emotional narrative.
Throughout his career, Stella continuously pushed the boundaries of painting and printmaking, moving from flat, restrained compositions to increasingly complex, dynamic forms. His work played a critical role in reshaping how artists and viewers think about abstraction, space, and repetition.
